This senior workshop explored the design capabilities and applications of computer numerical control (CNC) manufacturing in combination with digital modelling. The result was a fluid shape with hard edges, achieved through the use of Rhinoceros NURBS modelling software and a 3-axis CNC wood router.  The router leaves tool marks from the forming process that must be sanded smooth, incorporating an extensive hand-crafted finish to the product.

This porous wood, imported from East India, has a distinct rose-like scent when being worked, which persists with age. Strong and heavy, it takes an excellent polish after several coats of tung oil.
