Dougong (“cap and block”) is part of the network of interlocking wooden bracket supports essential to the timber frame structure of traditional Chinese building. Through thousands of years of development, very sound technical methods have been established regarding the choice of building materials, types of framework, manufacturing of components, and installation.

The Construc(table) capitalizes on the use of computer-based design and CNC milling to create an adaptive, multi-purpose table. Individual pieces are cut in 2D and easily assembled using pressure fit dowels. As a whole, the crisscrossing action of the brackets creates a strong and flexible structure, capable of resisting weight shifts in an earthquake-resistant way.

The project results as a new application to the traditional Dougong bracket construction system that accentuates form and density, while merging with horizontal beams that contrast space and projection. An ethereal inspiration of the Chinese dragon remained present in the design process.
