"Dinner is Served"
Pavilion Design - Build
The team project involved a full-scale temporary pavilion that could host a dinner for guests and critics. Visitors approach the site only to see disembodied legs and projected silhouettes of people eating, drinking, and mingling which create intrigue and entice people around the built enclosure. There is a gentle gradient between the built and natural sections of the site, distinguishing the service area versus the social area.
Food and wine is served from within nose-height tables, encouraging guests to utilize their senses and palate to discover both content and quality of food and drink. The seating at the back of the site is immersed in a candlelight garden, the lights themselves contributing to an inviting and calming effect.
There is a play on deception throughout all elements of the pavilion; the seating appears to be supported by earth, the lighting both natural and artificial, and hidden storage integrated beneath the tables continually services the guests. Many of the materials, including palettes, were salvaged from various sources to meet budget goals and later dissembled for reuse.
